Slavonian or Horned Grebes breed on a few lochs and smaller lochans around the eastern end of the Great Glen.

Slavonian Grebe pair, the flamboyant head-dress is only at its best early in the season whilst the birds are taking up breeding territories.

The Little Grebe is secretive species which seems to be increasing as a breeding species in the Highlands. Until a few years ago I only saw a few in winter on large fresh water and sea lochs. Now every lochan at low altitude seems to have a pair.
