October 2008

Back home on Loch Lochy it is a complete contrast, a huge area of water and relatively few birds. Any hope of getting a photograph usually requires a careful approach using a hide.

Kingfisher
Kingfisher-2

A few pairs of Kingfishers breed on the local rivers. For the past few autumns odd birds have turned up on the loch. No doubt attracted by the shoals of minnows and other small fish in the shallows at this time of year.

Goosander

Goosanders can tackle much larger prey and are around for much of the year

Common Scoter

A female Common Scoter made an out of season appearance right at the end of the month. A few pairs breed in the Highlands but this bird was more likely to be a wayward northern migrant.
